La Joya ISD Bullying Policy

It is the policy of La Joya Independent School District to prohibit bullying. Any student who believes that he or she has experienced bullying or believes that another student has experienced bullying should immediately report the alleged acts to a teacher, counselor, principal, or other District employee. A report may be made orally or in writing. FFI (LOCAL)

 

In 2010, La Joya ISD recognized the need to plan and coordinate a bullying prevention program to address the growing bullying and cyber bullying problem affecting children and teens nationwide. Bullying and cyber bullying is a serious issue leaving harsh impressions on American children. The La Joya ISD school board and administration adopted the Olweus Bullying Prevention Program district wide to assist in the prevention of bullying incidents throughout the district. A district team led by Marina Abdullah, Executive Director for Student Services, trained teams from each of the schools within the district, who in trun, train and monitor the bullying prevention efforts within thier own campuses. What is Bullying?

"Bullying is when someone repeatedly and on purpose says or does mean or hurtful things to another person who has a hard time defending himself or herself." OBPP Teacher Guide

Three Key Components of Bullying Behavior:

1. Involves an aggressive behavior.

2. Typically involves a pattern of behavior repeated over time.

3. Involves an imbalance of power or strength

What is Direct Bullying

1. Hitting, kicking, shoving, spitting

2. Taunting, name-calling, using degrading comments

3. Threatening or obscene gestures

What is Indirect Bullying

1. Getting another person to bully someone

2. Spreading rumors

3. Causing another person to be socially isolated

4. Cyber bullying

Effects of Being Bullied:

1. Lower self-esteem

2. Depression and anxiety

3. Absenteeism and lowered school achievement

4. Thoughts of suicide

5. Illness

Concerns about Children Who Bully:

Children who bully are more like to:

1. get into frequent fights

2. be injured in a fight

3. steal or vandalize property

4. drink alcohol and smoke cigarettes

5. be truant or drop out of school

6. report poor academic achievement

7. perceive a negative climate at school

8. carry a weapon

Effects of Bullying on Bystanders:

Bystanders may feel:

1. Afraid

2. Powerless to change the situation

3. Guilty for not acting

4. A diminished empathy for victims over time

 

Effects of Bullying on School Climate:

1. Bullying creates a climate of fear and disrespect.

2. Bullying interferes with student learning.

3. Students may feel insecure and not like school as well.

4. Students may perceive a lack of control or caring
